Agriculture blueprint to shape farming future

Farmers across Australia are being invited to have their voices heard on shaping the future of agriculture, with the launch of a national Blueprint for Australian Agriculture in Canberra today.

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) and Westpac are today jointly launching the Blueprint, which is designed to outline the role of farming and agriculture in Australia over the next 40 years, and the challenges it must overcome to achieve this.

Simpson Desert park reopened

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has reopened the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Conservation Park, 957km north of Port Augusta.

The park has been closed since September 22 in the interest of public safety due to a large bushfire near the South Australian and Northern Territory border.

The Witjira National Park, 887 kilometres north-west of Port Augusta, was also closed on September 22, but reopened to the public on September 23.

Exhausted fire fighters are welcoming any helping hand they can get, with a reported 25 fires burning in the Red Centre.

A massive grass fire which has been burning for more than a week in the Northern Territory has now spread into South Australia.

The blaze is centred largely in the Simpson Desert, near Poeppels Corner, which backs into the Queensland and South Australian borders.

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has been warning investors in Woodside’s proposed Kimberley gas hub that mounting issues with the development could soon become “big ticket risks.”

The ACF recently released an investor alert and conducted a series of teleconferences with investors to talk through three hurdles that have recently emerged in the James Price Point plan, around 50 kilometres north of Broome.

Resources industry warns of major losses under carbon tax

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) is urging state and federal parliamentarians to take heed of warnings by the Australian Coal Association on the impact of the proposed carbon tax on the state’s future prosperity.

QRC chief executive Michael Roche says the Queensland economy stands to lose $13 billion worth of income over 10 years to 2021/22 from proposed new coal mines that would not go ahead under the new tax.

Laws to protect the Queensland’s best cropping land will enter Parliament at the end of next month, two months earlier than expected.

Natural Resources Minister Rachel Nolan says the fast-track of the strategic cropping land laws will create more certainty for landholders sooner, by taking away the right to develop new open cut coal mines in the protected zones.

WA to become world leader in LNG

Construction of a $29 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub on Western Australia’s Pilbara coast is due to begin before the end of the year, following the announcement of energy giant Chevron’s final investment decision this week.

The Wheatstone project will see two LNG processing trains, a domestic gas plant and offshore infrastructure built 12 kilometres west of Onslow, and is set to position WA as the world’s second largest supplier of LNG. The go-ahead comes just days after the Federal Government last week granted the final environmental approval for the development.
