Farm groups back talk of regional tax review

Farming groups across the country are throwing their support behind talk of a review of regional tax offsets at this week’s Tax Forum in Canberra.

The Queensland and Western Australia State Governments have put forward a proposal to revamp Australia’s Tax Zone Rebate scheme, which could mean more meaningful tax incentives for those who live in rural and regional areas.

Fires burn on in Central Australia despite rain

Northern Territory fire fighters hold grave concerns for fires burning along the Plenty Highway in the Central Australia, despite recent rainfall dampening the area.

Thousands of square kilometres has gone up in flames in the region over the past few weeks, and around 20 millimetres of rain in the last 48 hours has extinguished most blazes south of the MacDonnell Ranges.

Dairy industry in crisis over discounts - ADF

Dairy farmers in the key drinking milk markets of Queensland, northern New South Wales and Western Australia are being hit hard by the unsustainable pricing of drinking milk at $1 per litre, according to Australian Dairy Farmer’s  president Chris Griffin.

Appearing before the Senate Economics References Committee Inquiry Mr Griffin gave evidence of the impacts of supermarket price decisions on the dairy industry.

Environmental groups reject "hopelessly flawed" Basin Plan

Ten major environment groups from all four Basin States have condemned the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s (MDBA) proposal to return only 2,800 gigalitres of water to the environment.

Emerging from a briefing with the MDBA this week, Friends of the Earth spokesman Jonathan La Nauze accused the Authority of walking away from their obligation to produce a Basin Plan using the best available science.

More fire crews head to Alice Springs

Back up fire crews are arriving in Central Australia today as a grass fire continues to rage near Alice Springs.

Volunteers from South Australia’s Country Fire Service (CFS) will join 24 CFS personal who’ve been fighting the blazes since last week.  CFS State Coordinator Malim Watts says the crews will continue to help Northern Territory fire fighters with mitigation burns, logistics and planning.

The Asia Pacific's toughest endurance motorsport event, the Australasian Safari, has come to a climax after seven days of incredibly challenging terrain and distance of the Western Australian desert - testing the mental and physical stamina of moto, auto and quad racers.

Stockyard shutdown by export ban fallout

Western Australia’s Port Hedland cattle export depot has written off a horror export season, shutting up shop two months earlier than usual.

The depot was one of the first to catch wind of the Federal Government’s ban on live exports in June. Around 2,000 head of stock were left stranded when exporters were ordered to cease loading, hours ahead of the announcement of a national ban.

QLD mine fined over environmental breach

A north Queensland mining company has been fined for breaching a court order and environmental protection orders.

Birla Mount Gordon Mine, 120 kilometres north-west of Mount Isa, pleaded guilty to the charges, has been fined $140,000 and ordered to pay $20,000 in investigation costs to the Department of Environmental Resources Management.
