QLD on high bushfire alert

Queenslanders are on high alert as bushfires continue to burn across large parts of the state.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) has attended almost 150 vegetation fires in the last 24 hours, and firefighters remain on the scene at fires near Charleville in the south-west, Mount Morgan in the central region, near Townsville in the north, and in Murray Upper in the far north region.

A fire weather warning has again been issued for today, and the QFRS is reminding residents in the Channel Country, Maranoa, Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts to remain cautious and vigilant.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting dry, fresh and gusty northerly winds to over western part of the state to move east over the interior today. Temperatures of around 32 degrees and winds up to 35 kilometers per hour have prompted another severe fire danger warning for southern and eastern parts of the state.

SOUTH WESTERN REGION

Waterbombing aircraft are at the scene of a bushfire burning at Ward, near Charleville. It broke out around midday yesterday and was brought under control overnight. QFRS says there is no threat to homes at present.

CENTRAL REGION

Residents near Mount Morgan can except smoke in the area today as two bushfires continue to burn in the area. QFRS says the fires have destroyed more than 4000 hectares of grassland since Sunday afternoon. Crews remained on the scene last night, and a fire spotting aircraft is in the air this morning.

NORTHERN REGION

A large grass fire is burning at Pinnacles, near Townsville, since braking out yesterday afternoon. QFRS crews worked through the night to construct fire breaks and conduct back-burning in the area. They say no property is under threat.

FAR NORTHERN REGION

Firefighters have door knocked the Murray Upper area, near Cardwell, as a bushfire continues to burn through inaccessible country. QFRS says the fire has been burning for more than a week, and residents are being urged to remain aware and vigilant.
