Disaster apathy?

I've watched the Christchurch scenes with great distance, and while I am sympathetic, I feel untouched by it all.

It's surprised me...this feeling of something so intense, so close in the global neighbourhood....but after the last few months on just our own continent, I think I've become too used to tragic scenes.

Is this the way we'll all become?  This aloof feeling of "oh, those poor people," and then move on, nothing to see, time to go about your jobs mentality.

It's sad I know, there are tragedies unfolding and reports coming in every minute, but I'm just exhausted by being held to a screen waiting for more information.

I think Toowoomba gutted me first, and most significantly.  Then came Yasi, and then Carlos, poor old Carnarvon too...and now, I'm just plumb worn out of natural disaster concern.

I hope this isn't  the pattern - that of little reaction in a future that will be regularly dotted with such events...

I second/third that. Too much. Please, media, keep us informed and let us know when there is something we need to know about. However we are drowning in full on 24/7 disaster coverage. We are becoming a bit ho hum, which is very disappointing. Take a deep breath, turn off the telly, be grateful if you have not been effected and send thoughts of support to those who have. Most of us can and will help in some way.

I agree Paula, I can only absorb so much disaster information...sadly it just gets too much
