Another bout of wet weather has been gratefully received at our place this week, with just over half an inch shoring up the season against another creeping dry. Scattered rain over the past 10 days has in many locations been lifesaving for cropping farmers hoping to actually get two years' harvest in a row.
But it did make it a wet day in Griffith today where our St Mary's junior girls league tag team had a very exciting day against the other small schools in the district (Coleambally, Goolgowi and others) to win the final of our pool in the round robin contest. Many of the children at the big event which drew schools from through the Western Riverina were playing league tag for the first time but approached it with absolute whole hearted gusto that was a joy to behold.
It was also a reminder of how small the country is, with children from different towns recognising each other from other sporting and social events, and their parents relishing the chance to catch up under umbrellas with firm friends of the past who they hardly encounter these days.
However our girls' wonderful win did have one drawback, with any mothers hoping an early exit from the competition would allow time to duck up the street for a "big town" shop left sorely disappointed! There was a definite expectation in our camp that an early out was a given, but we were more than happy with the reason to forego the rare opportunity to hit the shops in the big town.
Never mind, off to Wagga to contest the next level in 10 days and by the sounds of it our plucky team, hitting off against some well regarded teams from the big towns around, will have a fight on their hands this time. If the girls are out early this time the Wagga shops may see some action from the ladies from out west. But these girls keep surprising us so you never know!
